Teaching


Peter has been teaching percussion for over 30 years and is currently employed with the Instrumental Music Service of the Department for Education and Child Development, teaching percussion in Primary and Secondary Schools.
He has taught for the Commercial Music Course through TAFE and in many of the Private Schools throughout Adelaide.

The diversity of teaching styles has seen him teach via the DUCT system, similar to the school of the air but over a telephone, WebEx Internet Teaching to country South Australia, Hub Band programs, similar to the American Band Method, and as director for Percussion Ensembles and School Rock Bands.

His past students play in local, interstate and international bands, with many furthering their studies at University in percussion and drum kit, and include the winner of the 2000 National Marimba Competition held in Sydney.

Performing


Peter Matzick was born on the 4th June 1964 in Adelaide, South Australia. Peter started his music studies on piano and then turned to percussion. He completed Year 12 music, then began a Bachelor of Music course in 1983 at the South Australian College of Advanced Education. In 1987 he also completed a Bachelor of Education degree. He has studied with Adrian Harbutt, Ray Horne, Jim Bailey and Laurie Kennedy.

Peter has worked as a professional musician for the past 25 years. At age 17 he toured with Colleen Hewitt and more recently appeared with Australian acts Joey Parone, Peter Combe, Patrick McMahon, Jackie Love, John St Peters, Normie Rowe, Jane Scalli, Glen Shorrock, John Schumann, Brian Cadd and James Blundell.

He has played in the Hey, Hey, It's Saturday band, The Big Gig, Barry Humphries Touring Shows, Sydney show The Ritz Company, backed the international act The Fabulous Singlettes, the Las Vegas impressionists Max Pellicano and The Walkers. He was a member of Annabel and the Movers, who supported John Farnham at the Grand Prix ball.

His versatility has seen him work with jazz greats James Morrison, Don Burrows, and Don Lusher, and he has appeared with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. 1996 saw Peter tour Australia with the Legends of Rock from the United States and Canada and more recently supported jazz great Tony Bennett with Julie Anthony, worked with Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney, and rhythm and blues stars The Drifters.

He has performed with local groups which include Acoustic Juice, Classical Gas, Cactus Jack, Flaming Sambuccas, Julie and the Boyz, Jacki Cooper, JC Jazz, Wild about Harry, The Quiltz and Murphy's Law. He regularly performs throughout Australia and in 2006 performed in France.

Peter was the support act with Acoustic Juice for Guitar legend Santana at the 2008 Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
